How can counseling help me?

Counseling or traditional talk therapy, has long been recognized and proven repeatedly as an effective treatment for a host of emotional and behavioral difficulties. The therapeutic process is unique to each individual, but in general includes identifying things in your life that you wish to change or receive support on, then agreeing upon a way forward in which the therapist is there to guide and support you in the process.

How is counseling different than talking to a friend?

Therapists are bound to legal and ethical standards that protect your privacy, the integrity of the relationship, and your best interests. While an authentic rapport between the client and therapist is essential to growth, the therapist puts your needs and best interest first in the therapy session. The therapist is legally obligated to keep your information private, and highly trained as a professional listener. Therapists are ethically obligated to refer out if there are differences between the therapist and the client that get in the way of the therapist’s ability to provide the best care possible to the client.

Isn’t counseling for crazy people?

Many people feel that there is a stigma attached to seeking counseling/therapy/mental health treatment. Dahlia Wellness is a huge proponent of the movement to stamp out stigma, and empowers individuals to seek the care that they need. Dahlia Wellness staff seek counseling and wellness services for themselves as a regular part of self-care.

What is confidentiality?

Confidentiality is a legal word for privacy. Dahlia Wellness is legally mandated to report suspected or known child abuse or elder abuse, to take action if you intend to harm yourself or someone else, and may be required to release information when subpoenaed by a court of law. Other than these exceptions, Dahlia Wellness is legally and ethically required to keep the information that you share in therapy private and can only release information with your written permission.

What ethical code do you follow?

Dahlia Wellness follows the American Counseling Association code of ethics (https://www.counseling.org/docs/default-source/ethics/2014-code-of-ethics.pdf?sfvrsn=2d58522c_4) and is bound by the laws and rules of each state licensing board in which therapists provide care.

Do you offer equine therapy?

Equine therapy is not offered as a primary service, but on a select case by case basis.  Equines may be used to assist in the therapeutic process when appropriate and only within the scope of training of Dahlia Wellness staff and in adherence to the American Counseling Association’s Animal Assisted Therapy Competencies (https://www.counseling.org/docs/default-source/competencies/animal-assisted-therapy-competencies-june-2016.pdf?sfvrsn=c469472c_14). Per the ACA, animal assisted (equine) therapy is integrated into the counseling process when appropriate and is not used as a standalone intervention. Dahlia Wellness follows the Natural Lifemanship trauma-responsive approach to integrating equine therapy.
